Today I was talking with a friend about how amazing life is and what a miracle it is that we are here...all of us. Life is our first and most precious gift. I think everyday that mine is not to be taken for granted for so many reasons but mostly because I came from a beautiful and very broken woman who had lots and lots of obstacles in this life. It's hard for me to imagine that she could consider giving life to me and four other children with her painful past and relentless drug and alcohol addiction. It was as if darkness and defeat rode around on her shoulder as constant companions. I've explained to some of my siblings that, yes, our life was chaos with tons of pain, but we are "here" against the odds - rejoice in every second of this life! Every minute that we are alive is an opportunity to give back, which brings me to something I wrote in my book ---

"The Art of Giving" :

I believe that life is the first and best gift we receive. My parents taught me that. The awareness of that gift creates gratitude, and gratitude is reflected in giving. We all have something to contribute or share-the amount depends on your perception of abundance. the act of giving creates abundance in return, and I believe that is a universal law; not to mention it just plain makes you happy.
Happiness is an art; a feat unto itself, but giving helps to contribute to happiness. One of my father's favorite sayings was: "A poor man shames us all. Do you like my song? I'll sing it for you!" A generous spirit is contagious and breeds more generosity. If you doubt it, start giving and see what happens.
After reading this book, I sincerely hope you come away empowered to follow your heart and find your inner artist. Have and open mind for what is beautiful  to you and tap into that inner voice. When you stop listening to the external voices and listen to what resonates inside of you, then you are really on the path to creating a beautiful space. When you approach things from that perspective, staying true to yourself and the things you love, you never go wrong. Whether or not something is beautiful is completely up to you. If you don't like it, do it over . . . and remember to have fun in the process!
                             - Pearl.
"Thank you Mother for being so unselfish and giving me this amazing, amazing opportunity. I love you."

"Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough."
                            - Emily Dickenson

My precious daughter in law shares a similar childhood. She joined our family completely unaware of "how normal families are"- and WE are better for it! She recently lost her 4 month month old baby -a challenge to overcome for anyone- but God through His infinite mercy has held her close . I so admire the woman of thankfulness that she is- which is what your words here made me think of.
Thank you so much Robyn for giving your mother the honor she deserves for simply being your mother-
She shared you with all of us-and Kimberlys momma did the same.

God bless you, Robin. Thank you for sharing. I have a similarly painful childhood as you. It's a challenge to overcome the obstacles we grow up with, but you have soared like an eagle and are flying so high above those clouds. You are such an inspiration. I simply have to buy your book now. Blessings to you and all that you touch. <3

What a beautiful post from a lovely soul. it is so true what you said about giving. I too had a mother that was broken but I did not love her any less for it. She was still wonderful to me. thank you for reminding me of what truly is important in this life that we are blessed to be living. I love that you stay true to yourself. JLeighB

Beautiful post... and so perfectly said. I still deal with "that mother" but after my recent trip out west with my father dying, I realized.. "I will not be her!" my mantra has changed... Even throughout all the chaos I have entailed this year...this is my life..my choices...and I am and will be happy in my journey.
Thank you so much for sharing!

The Tests in our lives create our Testimonies... sharing them is a powerful Witness. A reminder that the issues of Life can be overcome and Life still celebrated with a Grateful Heart, Faith and unconditional Love. Quite often our Misery becomes our Ministry.

wow...this speaks loudly to my heart about the TRUTH in my own life...and the valleys of the shadow that my six daughters and i have walked through, and the wounds from the long journey i still carry. it is written though 'that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us" (romans 8:18)...so let us "walk by faith" and grow with strength & courage!

You really are such an inspirational woman. In this life there are givers and takers and you are most definitely a giver! You have such a pure soul. Robin: Im so touched every time I take the time to read anything you say. I wish the world would be as sweet and simple as you make it feel. I love what you said here " Women are powerful on their own but when they unite mentally, physically, spiritually, and in their hearts, they change the world. This to me is grace.
I agree and will try to be part of grace. You seem to have a sence of peace and love and Im guessing those around you benifit from it daily. I wish I had a friend like you... I try to remember every day that when you are greatful fear disappears and abundance appears. I find myself giving and feeling let down. The act of giving makes me feel good but I seem to want more back then most people in my life are willing to give. I think it's time I give with no regret. Expect no emotion or greatfulness in return. Im not sure how to do that, but I believe it may be necessary for me to learn so I can continue to be the person I want to be. A person of grace.
